Are You a Fascist Leader?

Whoa! That doesn’t sound very desirable, does it? Look at the fascist leader 7-point checklist below to see if you qualify:

¨  Care only about yourself, and lack empathy for other people

¨  Pretend to care about other people and tell them what they want to hear

¨  Angry and unhappy much of the time

¨  Blame others for your unhappiness instead of making positive changes

¨  Think that having enough money and power will finally make you happy

¨  See all relationships only as winning vs. losing/dominance vs. submission

¨  Must always be in the dominant position vs. the submissive position

The bottom line is that you treat other people like you treat yourself. If you don’t like yourself very much, then you’re not going to be able to form caring relationships with other people because you won’t like them very much either.

Acquiring leader power just amplifies these processes. If you’re basically a happy person, then you’ll use your power to share that happiness with your followers. If you’re basically an unhappy person, then you’ll use your power to share that unhappiness with your followers. We’ve all seen this in action with previous bosses, right?

What’s the main takeaway here? Once again, business is about relationships, and developing caring relationships with your follower is the best single predictor of long term leader success. If you develop your emotional intelligence skills, you will learn how to care about yourself and others.

Then as you acquire more leader power, you’ll have the skills in place to succeed fantastically over the long term. As an added benefit, it turns out that having caring relationships is one of the four primary sources of happiness.
